From zone 0 into the cloud: barrier-free communication with PC-based control

PC- and EtherCAT-based control technology, together with the terminals of the ELX series for direct connection of intrinsically safe field devices up to zone 0/20, offers all the prerequisites for the convergence of discrete and process automation. Due to its consistency and openness, PC-based control also represents the optimum basis for implementing networked production according to Industrie 4.0 and IoT concepts. Cloud communication can be easily implemented either via the TwinCAT IoT software or via the IoT coupler.

Very compact and intrinsically safe for direct connection of field devices in zone 0/20: The EtherCAT Terminals of the ELX series combine safety barrier with signal terminal functionality. Thanks to their large signal diversity, the ELX terminals can optimise virtually any process technology application. In combination with TwinSAFE SC (Single Channel) technology, they offer a compact solution for applications with requirements for intrinsically safe signal transmission and functional safety.

With the EtherCAT measuring modules, Beckhoff offers an integrated measuring chain from data acquisition to analysis in the cloud. Precise, fast and robust: the measuring terminals can be integrated directly into the modular EtherCAT terminal system and make measuring technology available on the standard automation platform.

From data acquisition to HMI: one control platform with TwinCAT

With its TwinCAT software, Beckhoff offers an integrated control and engineering platform for automation and process technology. In addition to conventional PLC and motion control processes, it includes the HMI, secure cloud connection via TwinCAT IoT and cloud-based analysis functions via TwinCAT Analytics. For process engineering applications, TwinCAT features integrated specific protocols and interfaces such as NAMUR, HART and FDT/DTM. The support of OPC UA guarantees secure and vendor-independent data communication.
